Books boxed with love help traumatised kids

This week PIF volunteers came together over pizza to package up 600 books to be donated to four Act for Kids treatment centres in Western Sydney, Ipswich, Adelaide and Melbourne. The books were purchased from Dymocks Children’ s Charities with over $6,000 raised from out Give it up campaign in April.  Act for Kids is a charity that assists children recovering from abuse.

Three staff from Act for Kids in NSW were there to be a part of it.

Robyn Eliudi, Practice Manager and Occupational Therapist, Act for Kids, said that literacy is often difficult for children that have experienced abuse in their early childhood as they often live in chaotic environments and this can mean children are not read to.

“In Sydney we have a library where kids can take books or trade books, making it easier for them to have engaging reading materials,” she said.

The Act for Kids Blacktown centre has assisted 96 children in the past 12 months from 36 different referrers. However, currently, 50% of families refer themselves.
