Kathrin takes action on youth homelessness

One of the great things about PIF is the enthusiasm and commitment of our volunteers. A great example is Kathrin Breitenstein from Arup has been volunteering at PIF for three years with PIF QLD, bringing her dedication to reducing youth homelessness. We asked her some questions about her PIF volunteering experience. See her responses. (Kathrin is on the right of photo)

How long have you been a volunteer for the Property Industry Foundation?

I’ve been with PIF’s PAExclusive committee for approximately 3 years

What events have you volunteered for?

I’ve volunteered at a few events, but each year I make sure to volunteer for the Charity Sailing Cup, as it’s SUCH a great day to be a part of.  It’s also a huge event, so it requires lots of ‘hands on deck’ to ensure it runs smoothly. I’ve also volunteered at a Buddy Day, where we took a group of young boys from one of our Charity Partners to Laser Tag, followed by pizza, it was such a fun day!

What motivated you to start volunteering?

I was fortunate enough to win an entry to the Charity Sailing Cup through a raffle at a Property Industry Foundation event. The moment I won, I started to research more about PIF and what it tries to achieve. I knew immediately that I wanted to help in any way I could. I contacted one of the volunteers at the event and as it happens, there was an opening on the committee, so it seems it was meant to be!

What is it like volunteering at the Foundation?

For me, it’s the feeling of being able to DO something. While there are always opportunities to help charities via donations and attending events, etc, being on the other side and helping to work for the best outcomes is both humbling and rewarding.

What do you think of the Foundation’s work in the community?

I admire PIF for the way it operates as a conduit. They use their reach and influence to attract donations and expertise and pass that onto the real heroes within our communities, our Charity Partners, who often don’t have the resources to build accommodation.  PIF helps to connect the missing link between the disadvantaged / homeless youth on our streets and the corporate world.Property Industry Foundation provides innovative and interesting ways to get involved, to donate, to contribute, and to spread the message about the real and serious issue – that no child should be without a home and hope for their future.

What would you say about your experience of volunteering to other people?

Simple... Do it. It is rewarding and fulfilling and helps to make the world a better place. You won’t regret it!

What makes volunteering worthwhile for you?

There are so many reasons I enjoy volunteering; the friendships I’ve made, seeing what changes it brings in the lives and the mindsets of our communities, hearing the stories about people whose lives have been improved and seeing kindness spread in what can be a very cruel and selfish world.

But the most fundamental reason I choose to volunteer with PIF is that in a privileged and advanced first world country such as ours, there is simply no reason a child should have to suffer alone on the streets.

What experience did you gain from volunteering?

I gained a much broader knowledge about so many issues in our communities that often go unnoticed, I’ve made some friendships that will last a lifetime, and I’ve gained immense gratitude for the fortunate life I have been given. Help make the world a better place. Volunteer for Property Industry Foundation.
